This will be the first of several lessons on apostasy: what it is, its signs, and how we can avoid it. We will examine some biblical examples to help understand this matter. Although we are certainly secure, nurtured, and protected as believers in Christ, this does not apply unless we respond to God’s grace and diligently fulfill his conditions according to his purpose for us.

In this lesson, we consider four aspects of the Holy Spirit’s work: He calls us; he gives us life; he sanctifies or makes us holy; he empowers us. I believe you will agree that these four blessings form a large and important part of the Holy Spirit’s work. Yet we find the Holy Spirit acting through the Word in all these things.

The words "holy" and "sanctified" mean the same thing. Translators use these words interchangeably to render the same Greek word. Thus, where one version has "sanctified" another might have "holy" This lesson is about the word "sanctification." We will examine five characteristics of saints and their sanctification.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit, in every believer in Jesus Christ, is taught in the gospel. The purpose of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling includes at least seven blessings which we will consider in this lesson.

The gift, renewing, outpouring, indwelling, or seal of the Spirit which all Christians are given in common, is concerned with the greater purpose of imparting, guaranteeing, and preserving sanctification unto eternal life. It was never intended that this gift should cease.

This is an overview of the New Testament's teaching on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We will examine three works of the Holy Spirit looking at the persons, purpose, period, and proof.
